The battle of Villareal

Nafarrate - Murua

On November 30, 1936, the Battle of Villarreal began, ending a month later with 1,500 dead and more than 5,500 injured.

The Basque army, at the service of the Republic, launched its offensive against Legutio. The population was taken by the rebellious nationals. The front covered a large part of the Cuadrilla de Gorbeialdea: Nafarrate, Eribe, Elosu, Zestafe, Acosta, Etxaguen ...

Nafarrate and Murua were, among others, the most destroyed towns; the churches were blown up, the houses were ransacked ... Many families were forced to flee. When they returned, they had to start from scratch, in dismantled houses, without livestock and with their lands sown with corpses.

Many people who left their homes to go to other places, remained hidden or helped the wounded were witnesses of these events. To all these people, to the documents of the time and to those who have worked for the sake of knowing these events, we owe the testimony of this visit.

A visit to the history of the northern front, a visit to recent history, a visit to an important battle in the heart of the Cuadrilla de Gorbeialdea, before the watchful eye of Mount Gorbea, which could change the sign of history.
